A few days ago a young artist (she could be my daughter) "challenged" me to post a picture of my art for five days in a row on Facebook and to challenge one other artist each day to do the same.  Well, I failed miserably, because I don't get to my computer every day,  so a few days went by between artworks #2 and #3, which I just posted today.  It is a generational thing...  But , non the less, it is a great idea.  It made me think of the pieces I'm most proud of and it got me to send them "out there" into the web.  So, thanks, Linnette Vázquez Polanco and keep up

Hace unos días, una artista joven, (que podría ser hija mía) me retó a que pusiera en FACEBOOK, durante 5 días consecutivos, una obra mía y que retara cada día a otro artista a hacer lo mismo.  Bueno, pues fallé porque durante varios días ni siquiera llegué a trabajar en la computadora, así es que pasaron varios días entre el día #2 y el día #3, que apenas acabo de "postear".  Es una cuestión generqacional..., pero una gran idea.  Me hizo pensar en las obras de las que estoy más orgullosa y ënviarlas a la red".  Gracias Linnette Vázquez Polanco y sigue p'alante con éxito!!!!

At the MAKER FAIR, last Saturday, we shared the space with a lot of new and exciting technology.  After all, the use of technology is "the way of the future"...BUT, there were also those who, like us, were showing their products, made by hand, mostly or partly.  We are, after all, makers also.  We met some that are open to ideas about finding ways to associate in order to reduce the duplication of certain efforts, such as advertising, accounting and marketing.  That is "the way of the future" for creative craftspeople 
like us.

En el MAKER FAIR del pasado sábado, compartimos espacio con mucha interesantísima tecnología.  Despues de todo, ese es el "camino del futuro"...PERO, también habían otr4os allí que presentaron sus trabajos hechos a mano, en parte o totalmente, como los nuestros.  Después de todo, también somos MAKERS.  Entre ellos, conocimos a varios que están abiertos a la idea de producir en asociación, para evitar la duplicación de esfuerzos en mercadeo, contabilidad y publicidad.  Ese es "el camino del futuro"  para los artistas y artesanos como nosotros.

This week we are getting ready for the MAKER FAIR, to be held at the c3tec school in Caguas this coming Saturday.  It promises to be a great place in which to showcase the idea that artists are MAKERS, in the best sense of the word.  We also want to put out there the belief  that by associating we can accomplish greater  things.  Fusión Isleña, a worker-owned corporation,  is proof of this.  We are on our 10th year and we have been showing to the world that there is more to creativity in Puerto Rico than just traditional crafts.  (Our drawing contest is also on its 9th year.)  Makers are people who turn ideas into reality, whether they use technology or not. We are looking forward to sharing with the other makers, and with the public the  ART of  "the idea come true"!

Esta semana nos estamos preparando para participar en el MAKER FAIR que se llevará a cabo este sábado en el colegio c3tec de Caguas.  Promete ser una gran activida y un magnífico  lugar donde presentar la idea de que los artistas son MAKERS (PRODUCTORES), en el mejor sentido de la palabra.  También queremos insistir en que asociándonos podemos lograr más.  Fusión Isleña, corporación propiedad de trabajadores,  es prueba de esto.  Estamos en nuestro 10mo año de demostrar que en PR hay excelentes artistas, además de artesanos.  (Nuestro concurso de dibujo también está en su 9no año.)  Los PRODUCTORES toman ideas y las materializan, ya sea usando o nó tecnología.  Estamos entusiasmados con la oportunidad de compartir con el público y con los otros "creativos"   el  ARTE   " de la idea"!

Conocimos a René Castillo primeramente como fotógrafo.  Hemos exhibido en la galería piezas suyas de fotografía desde hace tiempo y también alguno que otro cuadro.  Ahora nos ha traído 10 nuevos dibujos y pinturas en papel, de mediano formato que nos ponen a "disfrutar" de la riqueza de los colores y las formas.  Con títulos sugestivos, son una forma excelente de introducir en nuestro ambiente arte original y emotivo. Con un buen "matting" y marco, llenan una pared.  Sin invertir una fortuna puedes convivir con arte "de verdad".   Como digo yo a los visitantes del MAPR, que me preguntan como juzgar una obra:  "Si no te cansas de mirarla........."

René Castillo is first and foremost a photographer.  We have had his work in our gallery for a long time, and also an occasional painting.  Now he has brought us 10 new drawings and paintings done in paper, in medium format, that bring us the enjoyment of  "form and color" gloriously.  With suggestive titles, they are an excellent way of introducing into our space the enrichment of living with original pieces.  With a good matting and frame, they fill the wall with movement and emotion.  As I always say to visitors at the MAPR, when asked about judging the worthiness of a piece to purchase: " If you want to keep looking at it..........."

Maratón de dibujo

Nuevo año!!  Felicidades a todos!!!  Y nosotros aquí vamos de nuevo porque tan pronto regresamos de nuestras "forzadas" vacaciones (el Centro de Bellas Artes cierra hasta Reyes) le metemos mano a nuestro certamen anual de dibujo:  BOLIGRÁFICO(r).   Este año se celebra por 9na vez y ya estamos buscando auspiciadores y diseñando el afiche.  A más auspiciadores , más publicidad y más y mejores premios.  Con una donación para un Gran Premio de $500, esperamos atraer a artistas (no profesionales) de todas las edades y ver una calidad de dibujos que supere, si es posible, a las maravillas que hemos visto hasta ahora.  Fecha y detalles vienen pronto.

New year!  Best wishes to everyone!!!  And here we go again, because as soon as we came back from our "forced" vacations (Bellas Artes de Caguas closes until 3Kings), we begin working on our yearly drawing contest: BOLIGRÁFICO(r). This year is the 9th of the contest, and we are already searching for sponsors.  More sponsors means more publicity and better prices.  With a donation for a Grand Price of $500 cash, we hope to attract  amateur artists of all ages and see them produce drawings that will astonish us.  Date and details to follow soon!

Regalos para tus familiares, amigos... y para tí!!!

Desde el pasado jueves, tenemos en la galería una nueva colección de bultos y carteras, diseñados por Héctor Quiñones, un diseñador puertorriqueño que utiliza telas y accesorios "vintage" para crear piezas únicas, originales y de gran calidad.  

Al darle esta oportunidad a artistas que crean líneas en pequeña escala, hacemos un esfuerzo por que crezca el número de "creadores" que pueden vivir de su obra.  Ellos están deseosos de trabajar más, y tienen un caudal ilimitado de ideas...

Lo que falta son los clientes, que aprecien sus piezas y su labor.  En estas "fiestas" en que lo más fácil es ir al "mall" y comprar lo primero que vemos, recordemos que las personas especiales de nuestra lista (madres, hijas, hermanas, hermanos, amigos,...etc)  merecen que busquemos para ellos algo ESPECIAL!

Since last thursday, we have at Fusión Isleña a line of bags and purses designed and created by Héctor Quiñones,  a puertorrican who uses "vintage" fabrics and accessories for very unique and original pieces.

By giving artists that create small collections the opportunity to show their work, we are helping them become successful "creators". They just want to work, and have limitless ideas...

But they need clients to purchase their pieces...  In this "season" when we go to the mall and purchase the first thing we see, we should consider these other alternative:  the special people in our list (mothers, daughters, sisters, brothers, friends...etc) deserve that we take the trouble to search for something just as SPECIAL!!!

SMALL BUSINESS SATURDAY!

Queridos amigos:  La semana pasada la farmacia del pueblo de Caguas me cobró $19.99 por un producto que en Walgreens pagué durante meses a $55.00!   Las farmacias locales, así como las ferreterías independientes son ejemplos de negocios que te dan mejores alternativas (no tienes que comprar una libra de clavos cuando sólo necesitas una docena...) y a precios competitivos.

Hoy es SMALL BUSINESS SATURDAY, el día que señalamos para recordar que los pequeños negocios son los que nos dan acceso a variedad y servicio personalizado...las grandes empresas limitan nuestras alternativas para lograr mayor márgen de ganancias.  Además, el $ que se gasta en esos negocios sale instantaneamente de PR, mientras que el de los negocios locales se queda AQUÍ.

Por favor, tengan en cuenta esas cosas al hacer sus compras.  Es otra manera de "hacer patria"sin involucrar la política...

Dear Friends:  Last week I bought at the Caguas town center's drugstore a product for $19.99 that I had been buying at Walgreen's for months and that cost me $55.00 there!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Local drugstores, like local hardware stores (where you can buy the nails that you need, instead of having to buy a pound), provide us with more choices and personalized attention, while Big Business does the opposite, to maximize their profits. Besides, what you spend there leaves PR immediately, while in the local stores the profits stay HERE.

Today is SMALL BUSINESS SATURDAY, a day used to create awareness of the need for this small businesses to survive.

Please think about this when you go out to do your shopping...It is a way of helping our country that has nothing to do with politics.
