Desde el pasado jueves, tenemos en la galería una nueva colección de bultos y carteras, diseñados por Héctor Quiñones, un diseñador puertorriqueño que utiliza telas y accesorios "vintage" para crear piezas únicas, originales y de gran calidad.  

Al darle esta oportunidad a artistas que crean líneas en pequeña escala, hacemos un esfuerzo por que crezca el número de "creadores" que pueden vivir de su obra.  Ellos están deseosos de trabajar más, y tienen un caudal ilimitado de ideas...

Lo que falta son los clientes, que aprecien sus piezas y su labor.  En estas "fiestas" en que lo más fácil es ir al "mall" y comprar lo primero que vemos, recordemos que las personas especiales de nuestra lista (madres, hijas, hermanas, hermanos, amigos,...etc)  merecen que busquemos para ellos algo ESPECIAL!

Since last thursday, we have at Fusión Isleña a line of bags and purses designed and created by Héctor Quiñones,  a puertorrican who uses "vintage" fabrics and accessories for very unique and original pieces.

By giving artists that create small collections the opportunity to show their work, we are helping them become successful "creators". They just want to work, and have limitless ideas...

But they need clients to purchase their pieces...  In this "season" when we go to the mall and purchase the first thing we see, we should consider these other alternative:  the special people in our list (mothers, daughters, sisters, brothers, friends...etc) deserve that we take the trouble to search for something just as SPECIAL!!!

Queridos amigos:  La semana pasada la farmacia del pueblo de Caguas me cobró $19.99 por un producto que en Walgreens pagué durante meses a $55.00!   Las farmacias locales, así como las ferreterías independientes son ejemplos de negocios que te dan mejores alternativas (no tienes que comprar una libra de clavos cuando sólo necesitas una docena...) y a precios competitivos.

Hoy es SMALL BUSINESS SATURDAY, el día que señalamos para recordar que los pequeños negocios son los que nos dan acceso a variedad y servicio personalizado...las grandes empresas limitan nuestras alternativas para lograr mayor márgen de ganancias.  Además, el $ que se gasta en esos negocios sale instantaneamente de PR, mientras que el de los negocios locales se queda AQUÍ.

Todavía disfrutando en la galería de la exhibición "Caballos y Más Caballos"  y a la vez pensando en las fiestas que se aproximan...

We are still enjoying the beautiful exhibition  "Caballos y Más Caballos"  (Horses and more horses) by GLORIA BOSA OSORIO, and starting to think about the coming holidays...

Anoche en Fusión Isleña...

Anoche, a pesar del tapón y la lluvia, celebramos con éxito la apertura de la exhibición "Caballos y Más Caballos" de la artista Gloria Bosa Osorio.  En las fotos arriba:
una vista de la galería antes de la actividad, la orgullosa artista con la obra principal de la exhibición, titulada "Después de Edgar Degas: la Procesión Antes de la Carrera", Gloria recibe una serenata del cantautor Eduardo Villanueva, una vista de los presentes, y unas palabras de Jorge Antares sobre la trayectoria de la artista.

Aunque se perdieron el "party",pueden ver las obras hasta el 29 de noviembre y con gusto le empaquetamos su favorita!

Last night, in spite of the rain and the traffic jam, we had an excellent opening of the exhibition "Horses and More Horses", by artist GLORIA BOSA OSORIO.   In the photos above:  a view of the gallery ready for the activity, the proud artist with her masterpiece  Äfter Edgar Degas, the Procession Before the Race",  Gloria being serenaded by singer/songwriter Eduardo Villanueva, a view of the crowd, and Jorge Antares who said a few words about the artist and her career.  


Even though you obviously missed the "party"  you can still enjoy all the paintings until the 29th of the month and we will happily wrap for you whichever you decide to take home!!!

This Thursday...for art lovers and horse lovers!!!

After many months of planning and painting, and a lot of hard work, our friend and admired Caguas artist, GLORIA BOSA OSORIO is ready to show her latest  body of work:  this exhibition, called "Horses and More Horses",   because it really couldn't be called anything else.  
The plethora of equine images in her mind has finally made itself come forth, and canvas after canvas is now populated with these animals, prancing, running, and interacting, in all sorts of interpretations. Being as brave as she is when faced with so many ways of expression, we get to enjoy, and maybe take home, images that appeal to to the viewers for different reasons.  No doubt that horse lovers will be touched, surprised and pleased.

Después de muchos meses de planes y pintura y mucho árduo trabajo, nuestra amiga y admirada artista de Caguas, GLORIA BOSA OSORIO, está lista finalmente para dejarnos ver su reciente cuerpo de trabajo en esta exhibición titulada "Caballos y Más Caballos", que realmente no podía llamarse de ninguna otra manera.

Un caudal de imágenes equinas escaparon por fin de su mente y fueron a habitar en lienzo trás lienzo, pastando, corriendo, jugueteando, en toda clase de interpretaciones.  Con característica valentía, la artista se enfrenta a sus variadas manifestaciones y nosotros las observamos y hasta quizás nos llevemos con nosotros aquellas con las que nos identifiquemos de manera especial.  Para los amantes de los caballos será sin duda una gran experiencia.

On Nov 4, at 7:30 PM we will host the opening of GLORIA BOSA OSORIO'S new exhibition:  Caballos y Más Caballos..." at our gallery- Fusión Isleña.  She is planning a great occasion, as is her custom.  Her friends and family will be here, but this is a grand collection for horse lovers, and we want them to come and see...  Gloria is celebrating the "shape" of the horse in here very personal way.  If you know anyone interested in this theme,, bring him over...it will be an unforgettable experience!

Cristo o Quijote?

Créanlo o no, ese es el título de la exhibición que comienza la próxima semana en Limner Gallery, en Hudson NY. Contestándo a un "open call" de las exhibiciones mensuales de esta "vieja" galería que se mudó de la ciudad de NY a Hudson a partir de los sucesos de 9/11,  Hiram Rosado, miembro y presidente de Fusión Isleña, se decidió a enviar su pieza "Cristo o Quijote" ... por correo! Cuando supo que era uno de los 28 artistas escogidos, se enfrentó a la "angustia de la separación" que desgraciadamente es inevitable cuando mandamos piezas fuera de este país que está rodeado de agua por todas partes...  Los artistas "isleños" encuentran su mercado encerrado ya que la transportación de las piezas, sobre todo las grandes y pesadas, es riesgoso y caro.  

Ayudar a los artistas que hacen su obra en PR a acceder a otros mercados siempre fué una de las metas de Fusión Isleña.  La competencia entre artistas para echar su obra al mundo es intensa pero exhilarante.  Nuestra obra merece ser vista,  Quién dijo miedo, señores?

Believe it or not, that is the title of the monthly show that begins next week at Limner Gallery, in Hudson NY. This öld"gallery moved from Manhattan to Hudson after traumatic 9/11.   By answering an open call for works that fit that title,  member and president of Fusión Isleña, Hiram Rosado, had to make up his mind to send this ceramic piece called Christ or Quixote?...BY MAIL!  After being among the 28 artists chosen, he had to face the "separation anxiety" which is inevitable for artists that have to send pieces away from this land, surrounded by water... Island artists see their market severely limited because transportation for their pieces is both expensive and risky.

From the beginning, it has been one of the long-term goals of Fusión Isleña to help artists that want to reach other markets "out there".  The competition is tough and the results uncertain but the work deserves to be seen.  AVANTI!

Estuvimos en...

...el maravilloso concierto que dió la Orquesta Sinfónica de PR en el Centro de Bellas Artes de Caguas el pasado sábado, en recordación y homenaje al fenecido Alcalde William Miranda Marín.  Todavía no nos recuperamos de su muy lamentada desaparición y siempre honraremos su memoria.  

Fusión Isleña  "vino a parar a Caguas"  por gestión directa y personal suya.  Cuando fundamos nuestra Corporación Especial Propiedad de Trabajadores, la número 100 en PR,  alquilamos un espacio en el Centro para montar una exhibición y presentarnos a la prensa como la única PT en Puerto Rico compuesta por artistas.  Tuvimos el honor de que él estuviera presente en la apertura y,  quedando encantado con nuestra oferta, nos dijera estas palabras:  : "Yo quiero que ustedes se queden en Caguas".  De primera intención nos invitó a quedarnos en ese local y luego,  cuando nos mudamos frente a la boletería, nos siguió auspiciando.  

Si tuvieramos una peseta por cada persona que entra y se queda maravillado por la calidad de nuestra oferta...  !!!    Willie fue cliente nuestro.  Necesitamos que nuestro público tenga la visión que tuvo él:        APOYEMOS A LOS ARTISTAS QUE PRODUCEN EN PUERTO RICO!                                       ELLOS SON PARTE IMPORTANTE DE LA ECONOMÏA LOCAL.

Last Saturday we had the privilege of enjoying the wonderful concert presented at the Centro de Bellas Artes de Caguas by the Puerto Rico Symphony Orchestra in memory of past  beloved mayor, William Miranda Marín.  We will always miss and honor him.

Fusión Isleña put down it's "roots"  in Caguas because of his vision and personal invitation.  When we founded a Corporación Especial, Propiedad de Trabajadores (Special Worker-owned Corporation), the 100th in PR and the only one by artists, we rented a space in Bellas Artes de Caguas so that we could present our company to the press.  We had the honor of receiving his visit on the night of the opening of our exhibition and, being impressed by the quality of what he was seeing, he said to us:  "I want you to stay in Caguas."  Fom that first "home" we moved to the space in front of the ticket office, still with his support.

If we only had a quarter for each time someone admires our art offer!!!  Willie was also our client, and that is precisely what we need,   IN ORDER TO KEEP HELPING THE ARTISTS WHO STAY AND PRODUCE IN PUERTO RICO!  WE ARE PART OF THE ECONOMY !!!

El alcalde da el saludo

El moderador, Dr. Efraín Vázquez Vera presenta a las primeras panelistas

Ayer viernes se llevó a cabo en el Centro de Bellas Artes de Caguas el 2do. Congreso de Sostenibilidad, subtitulado Cultura y Agricultura: Un modelo de producción sostenible para el desarrollo agrícola y cultural de Puerto Rico.  La Sra. Ivonne Class (productora de espectáculos) nos habló de como hay cosas típicas de PR, como la "salsa" que pueden ser desarrolladas para producir ganáncias sólidas.  La Dra Lilliana Collado (Dir. ICP) nos habló de proyectos que el ICP está desarrollando para la promoción de turismo cultural, en especial de una "Ruta Taína"  que se está fraguando,  y la Sra. Ediltrudis Pichardo (Viceministra de Cultura de la Rep. Dom.) nos describió lo que se está ya llevando a cabo a este fin en la República Dominicana. El mensaje aglutinador de las tres ponencias fué:  QUEDA MUCHO POR HACER.  Estamos entusiasmados!  Por la tarde los panelistas hablaron ya en concreto de la Agricultura y de todo el crecimiento que ES NECESARIO en este renglón.

Yesterday we were invited to the 2nd Congress on Sustainability, at the Centro de Bellas Artes in Caguas.  It was subtitled Culture and Agriculture, a model for sustainable production for the economic development in culture and agriculture in PR .  Show producer Ivonne Class proposed developing such tipical things as "salsa" as profitable attraction to the island.  Dra. Lilliana Collado (ICP) recounted things that the PR Institute is doing to promote cultural tourism, in particular a "Taino Trail" that is in the works,  and Mrs. Ediltrudis Pichardo, Viceminister of Culture of the Dominican Republic told of things that are already being done to this effect in that sister country.   The overall message was THERE IS A LOT TO BE DONE.  We are enthusiastic about that message.  In the afternoon , panelists talked about parallel efforts in  agricultural development that are  DIRELY NEEDED.  We must move forward and become more self sufficient.

...la apertura de la excelente  exposicion de los distinguidos profesores de la Liga De Arte De  San Juan.Tanto la calidad de las obras presentadas, como la tridimensionalidad del montaje, estimulan al espectador a atender el detalle en la exploracion de una sala transformada.  Recomendamos a todos  visitar la Liga; vale la pena.




We attended the opening of the excellent exhibition of the distinguished professors of the Liga De Arte de San Juan.  Both the quality of the works presented and the meticulousness of the spacial placing, encourage the spectator to take in the details, exploring the transformation of the well known space.  We strongly recommend a visit to the Liga. It is well worth your time.

Hiram, el Honorable Alcalde de Mayaguez, Yo (Marimer) y Silvia Aguiló, fundadora de la Incubadora

Me adelanto a Hiram, que nos hablará del jueves, para contarles que el viernes estuvimos en la ceremonia de la firma de la alianza entre la Incubadora de Industrias Creativas, el RUM y el Municipio de Mayaguez.  Si no han oído de la Incubadora, vale la pena investigar. Es una gestión única porque su propósito es el establecimiento de empresas creativas en 8 renglones:  video juegos, artes gráficas, cinematografía y televisión, neo-artesanías,  diseño industrial, música, diseño de moda y turismo cultural. El RUM aportará apoyo intelectual y sus laboratorios , y el Municipio les facilitará una sede desde donde operar. I skip ahead of Hiram, who will write about Thursday, to tell you about our presence Friday at the signing, in Mayaguez, of an alliance between Incubadora de Industrias Creativas, the RUM  and the Municipality of Mayaguez.  If you haven't heard about this project, it is well worth your time.
The Incubadora is an effort to aid artists in the start of 8 different creative industries: video games, graphic arts, film and TV, contemporary crafts, industrial design, music, fashion design,and cultural tourism.The RUM will provide their laboratories and intellectual support, and the Municipality will give them a place to start.  It is a new way of collaborating for the good of our future...   We need more people like Silvia, thinking big and aiding to bring forth our many talents.

Recibimos de la Sra. Silvia Aguiló la invitación a la ceremonia que hará realidad un proyecto que lleva fraguándose desde hace tiempo.  Esta colaboración hará posible que los "creativos" del área del Oeste encuentren un apoyo para sus proyectos.  La incubadora cuenta con espacios de producción y todo tipo de apoyo para hacer que el artesano-artista pueda operar como un productor exitoso y como un negocio viable.   Celebramos con ellos y esperamos algún día seguir sus huellas.

We have received from Silvia Aguiló the invitation to the ceremony that will turn her efforts into reality.  This collaboration will make it possible for the "creatives" of the western area to find 
backup for their projects.  The "incubator" will have for them spaces to work in, and help with the "business" of creating viable artistic products for the market.  We wish them all the best and hope to, one day, follow in their footsteps.

To conserve or not to conserve...

Last Wednesday I had the opportunity of sitting in on a talk about conservation of contemporary art given by professors Chakira Santiago and Irene Esteves at the MAPR.   This rather shocking photograph shows one of the works they mentioned.  While Ms Santiago gave us a very organized and useful chunk of information about the things to be considered when you are in charge of a valuable work of art, Ms Esteves addressed us as artists and challenged us to think about materials and the "future" of our art.   As Hiram often says, "artists work for history", so it seems that we should want our pieces to survive...   As a commentary, I suggested that contemporary art is counting on photography (still and motion). to be the real repository of our works.  We know that countless photographs (specially from cell phones) are going to be taken and we trust that at least a few "official ones" will save our work forever.  Still, the disappearance of the work itself might create a void, that can not be filled by images... 

Contemporary art incorporates, not only perishable materials, but also materials whose longevity is still unknown.  It happened to me with my first rope sculptures (marimercebollero.com)  because I used a glue that years latter turned brittle and unstable.  I solved the problem by going back to sewing the fabric...the tried and true old way of creating with textiles...  

What do you say?  Is creating with unstable materials irresponsible or just the way of the future?

El pasado miércoles tuve la oportunidad de escuchar una charla sobre sla conservación de obras de arte contemporáneas dictada por las profesoras Chakira Santiago e Irene esteves en el MAPR.  Esta foto bastante "llamativa" muestra una de las obras problemáticas que mencionaron.  Ms. Santiago nos proveyó una gran cantidad de información sobre la preservación de las obras de las que seamos responsables y Ms Esteves se dirigió a nosotros como artistas, presentes y futuros,  y nos retó a pensar en nuestra responsabilidad al elegir los materiales.  Como dice Hiram..."los artistas trabajan para la historia"... pero, en ese caso, nos tenemos que preocupar de la preservación de nuestro trabajo.  Yo mencioné, a modo de comentario, que hoy en día confiamos en que nuestro trabajo quedará recogido en innumerables fotos y videos y que ciertamente algún record oficial quedará para la posteridad.   Pero al desaparecer las obras originales, se forma un "vacío" porque no es lo mismo experimentar el original que verlo en fotos?

El arte contemporáneo no sólo utiliza materiales que sabemos se van a deteriorar sino tambien cosas cuya duración desconocemos.  A mí me pasó con las esculturas de soga (marimercebollero.com)  en las que al principio utilicé un pegamento que resultó degradarse con los años.  Tuve que recurrir al tradicional método del arte textil: hilo y aguja.

Me imagino que hay opiniones diversas:   Es "irresponsable" crear obras con materiales perecederos?

Te gustan los flamboyanes?

Y a quién no???   Y este año se lucieron de verdad, floreciendo más que nunca y durando porque la falta de lluvia hizo que conservaran la flor...

Pero, como se pinta un cuadro contemporáneo de un flamboyán?  Algo que no parezca uno de esos cuadros costumbristas que pintan los artistas aficionados y qué usualmente incluyen una casita en una loma?   Esta obra de Jaymee Weinreich es muy diferente.   Es lo que se llama una triada, de  color.   El azul violáceo, el verde amarillento y el anaranjado  están equidistantes en la rueda de colores y se combinan a la perfección.  En esta obra no hay marrones ni negros, ni colores neutrales.  Todo es riqueza y fuerza.  Nunca hemos visto un cuadro de flamboyán con tanta "personalidad"!  Se vería estupenda en cualquier oficina o casa moderna.


Who doesn't like flamboyanes???  And this year they flowered more and lasted  more because the lack of rain let them keep their flowers longer...

But, how can you paint a flamboyán that looks "contemporary"?  Something that doesn't look like one of those traditional pieces done by "Sunday painters" that include a little house on a hill. Well, this work by Jaymee Weinreich does the trick.  It is done with just three colors, a triad.  Blue violet, orange and yellow green are equidistant in the color wheel, and match perfectly.  There is no brown here, nor black, nor neutral colors.  It is all richness and vibrancy.  We have never seen a flamboyan paingting with so much personality!  It will certainly look fantastic in a modern office or home.

Nuestra Escuela, fundada en el amor, donde jóvenes y adultos, como Quijote, convierten sueños y metas en realidad creando calidad de vida para sus familias. ¡Así nos ayude Dios!

Cumplido el sueño de un proyecto educativo integral El astro boricua Ricky Martin regresó el martes en la mañana al Centro Tau, en Loíza, pero en esta ocasión para compartir con la comunidad estudiantil de Nuestra Escuela (NE) que habitará los espacios de este proyecto educativo alternativo en el que se promueve la educación integral y personalizada. Ana Yris Guzmán, directora de NE condujo al artista y filántropo por algunos de los salones del Centro Tau donde lo esperaban ansiosos los más de 100 niños y jóvenes de nivel elemental, intermedio y superior, para quienes este espacio es, a partir de hoy, su nuevo hogar de estudios y formación. El Centro Tau es un sueño idealizado por Ricky Martin alentado por su misión de aportar a combatir la pobreza y la trata humana, al tiempo que defiende y protege los derechos humanos de los niños y jóvenes. Su construcción inició en 2008 y concluyó hace unos meses gracias a las aportaciones de fundaciones sin fines de lucro y entidades gubernamentales. El costo del proyecto fue $3 millones, de los que más del 80% fueron fondos aportados por fundaciones. Centro Tau es un proyecto social de vanguardia que integra servicios educativos, salubristas y de apoyo biosicosocial. Su andamiaje está sostenido sobre la colaboración de tres entidades puertorriqueñas: NE, Ser e Iniciativa Comunitaria. Desde la perspectiva educativa, el Centro Tau representará un nuevo espacio de educación holística en Puerto Rico cuyas bases están ancladas en el modelo educativo desarrollado e implantado por NE, una organizaciones sin fines de lucro que lleva 14 años trabajando con niños, adolescentes y jóvenes que han sido abandonados por la escuela tradicional. Para Justo Méndez, presidente de NE, el Centro Tau personifica “la propuesta al país de un nuevo paradigma de la educación pública con nuevos modelos de aliarnos”. “Al Centro Tau venimos cuatro aliados no a coexistir en el plantel sino a incorporar nuestros saberes, nuestras pasiones y nuestros amores en un servicio integral a una niñez y una juventud que nos honra en permitirnos trabajar con ella. Hemos dado todo lo mejor de nosotros por cumplir este sueño”, señaló Méndez Arámburu la mañana del lunes durante su alocución en los actos de inauguración del Centro Tau. La educación que se ofrecerá en el Centro Tau será una alternativa, personalizada, democrática y enfocada en desarrollar seres humanos saludables emocionalmente, para lo que se integrarán servicios educativos, de salud y de apoyo biosicosocial para ellos y sus familias. “Centro Tau es un nuevo espacio para la diversidad, para que cada uno de nuestros jóvenes se desarrolle. Aquí los capacitaremos para que autodirigan su educación y puedan llevar su formación a donde quieran llevarla”, precisó el Presidente de NE. Ricky Martin, en tanto, dijo que aspira a que desde su centro se forjen seres solidarios, comprometidos y que crean en la igualdad. Las instalaciones del Centro Tau, que ubica en la comunidad Las Cuevas de Loíza, tienen nueve salones, una biblioteca, un centro de cuido, un anfiteatro, un centro de apoyo biosicosocial, una oficina administrativa y áreas recreativas.

Frecuentemente nos preguntan si vendemos alguna obra que vaya con tal o cual color de pared o de muebles........ o .....bien.  Las obras de arte  tienen carácter propio.  Responden a las inquietudes de quien las realiza y a  los espectadores que prestan su atención , tiempo y emociones. Sin embargo, que nos impulsa a adquirirlas , a hacernos acompañar por ellas?   El color de las paredes?   El tema?   El prestigio del artista?   La moda?   La cultura del comprador?  La competencia social?   


We are frequently asked if we have available something that "goes" with a certain wall color, or a piece of furniture...well...  Works of art have their own personality.  They  are born from the depths of the artist that creates them and speak to the viewer who invests time, attention and feelings in appreciating it.  Nevertheless...what moves us to want to purchase them, and live with them?  Is it the color of the wall?  Is it the theme?  The prestige of the artist?  The current fashion in art?  The cultural background of the purchaser?  Or just the need to show it off?

Art in Restaurants

            It is amazing the rate that new restaurants open and the rate that restaurants go out of business.  

           Think about the dreams people have when they open a restaurant. What they can serve, drinks they can offer, the tables, the dishes and glasses, the parking lot etc. But when it comes to atmosphere many of them fail. It doesn’t matter if the restaurant is expensive or economical, atmosphere matters. If you have two restaurants side by side and they both serve rice and beans, both delicious, and they serve chicken, pernil, fish all perfectly cooked but one restaurant took care in the decorations and the other didn’t, which one would you choose?

               To me atmosphere is as important as the food. So, I ask, why don’t more restaurants put art on their walls? Why can’t they give their patrons something to look at while they are waiting for their food? Is it that they decide, since their prices are low, they should put cheap posters on their wall instead of trying to give some sort of class to their business. Really?

 

               Certainly everyone knows an artist. Instead of asking them to put art there for free at the artist’s expense (which is why many good artists may not do it), can’t they work on a payment plan with the artist or gallery instead?  Whether it is a gourmet or a sandwich restaurant, atmosphere is an important investment for a business and it will keep people coming in.

Una fusión diferente...

Santurce es Ley

...En caso de que se lo hayan perdido...  La actividad Santurce es Ley incorpora varios medios de arte y atrae a esa parte de la ciudad gran cantidad de artistas jóvenes.  Yo digo que aunque sean otro tipo de fusión, lo importante es que tienen el mismo empeño que nosostros:  colaborar para adelantar el arte en Puerto Rico y dar a conocer el talento que produce aquí.

Cuando se formó Fusión Isleña, P.T., un grupo de artistas de diferentes disciplinas y grados de experiencia nos unimos para ayudarnos mutuamente a promover nuestras ventas (porque el artista tiene dos opciones: vender al público o vivir de auspicios).   La palabra "fusión" todavía no estaba ni siquiera de moda.  No discriminamos en terminos de estilos, materiales, fama  ni experiencia...sólo nos interesa el nivel de calidad.  

Decimos a menudo que si tuviéramos una peseta por cada persona que admira nuestra galería, estaríamos mucho más solventes...   Nosotros admiramos el trabajo de esos artistas que han embellecido Santurce y nos unimos en espíritu a ellos deseándoles muchos triunfos más.

In case you missed it...Santurce es Ley   is composed of various art expressions and attracts to that part of the city many young artists.   I say that they even though they are another type of fusion, their goal is the same as ours:  to collaborate in order to move forward the art that is produced in Puerto Rico and the talent that produces it .

When we created Fusión Isleña, P.T. a group of artists from different disciplines and degrees of experience got together to help each other in promoting our sales (because there is only two options: selling or living off grants).  The word "fusion"  wasn't even "in "  then.  We didn't discriminate in terms of style, medium, fame or experience...we only cared about the quality.

We often say, jockingly, that if we had a quarter for every time someone admires our gallery, our finances would be a lot better off...  Well, we admire the work of all those artists that have made Santurce so spectacular and join them in spirit wishing them many more successes like that.

En los 25 años que llevo viviendo en P.R. he visto el crecimiento del arte en la Isla.  Muchos pueblos han invertido en el embellecimiento de sus plazas y carreteras mediante la instalación de arte público hecho por artistas locales.  Bravo por los políticos!

Mi pregunta es:  Por qué los doctores, abogados y otros profesionales con oficinas donde acude el público no hacen lo mismo?  Los que puedan costearlo, deberían apoyar a los artistas locales, enorgulleciéndose de ofrecer a sus clientes mejores ambientes.  Es agradable tener buenas sillas, lámparas y mesas pero...qué hay de las paredes?  Menos importa el sofá...!!!

Hay buenas reproducciones, serigrafías, grabados y hasta originales de costo moderado.  Dónde mejor para que el público disfrute y, que mejor oportunidad de tener una "galería de arte"? 

Art in public places in Puerto Rico

Since I have lived in Puerto Rico (25 years) I have seen an increase in art on the island. Many towns have invested in the beautification of their plazas and roads by installing works of art done by local artists.  Good for the politicians!

My question is – why aren’t doctors, lawyers and other offices that deal with the public doing the same thing? Those that can, should support the local artists and also take pride in their clients by improving the surroundings. Nice to have comfortable chairs, a coffee table, nice lamps but what about the walls? Who cares about the sofa?

It doesn’t have to be expensive. There are reproductions, serigraphs and even reasonably priced originals. Where better place to show off art than a public office?  What a great opportunity to have a gallery for art?

Art to wear at Fusión Isleña

As artists that we are, we recognize and appreciate the process that goes on in the creation of exclusive pieces of "art to wear".  The decision making of the artist involves choices of form, color and materials, which are the elements of art, and decisions of size (proportion) , repetition (rhythm), balance, contrast and focal point (emphasis), which are the elements of composition.  Through it all, the artist must keep in mind his original idea.   This is what creating means. 

Next week we are going to create at our gallery an area where this type of work will be showcased.  There will be much to admire, buy, gift and...WEAR!!!

Como artistas que somos, podemos apreciar el proceso de la creación de una pieza exclusiva de "arte para ponerse" (En español no hay una buena frase que equivalga a "art to wear, verdad?)  El artista tiene que tomar decisiones en cuanto a forma, color y materiales, que son los "elementos del arte"  que utilizamos todos los artistas.  También se toman decisiones sobre el tamaño (proporción), la repetición (ritmo), balance, contraste y punto focal (énfasis), que son los elementos de la composición.  Y todo esto mientras se asegura de no perder de vista su idea original.  Esto es lo que significa "crear".  

La semana próxima, planeamos montar en nuestra galería un área dedicada a presentar este tipo de piezas. Habrá mucho para admirar, comprar, regalar...y PONERTE!

Do you wear art?

Estola de seda- "One of a kind"

There is art that we wear...hand painted silk, one of a kind jewelry, hand painted purses,...  The artist may choose to do this kinds of pieces for many reasons.  He or she might just want their pieces to be "out there", on the street, for everybody to see.  Or the idea might be to "intervene" the human figure, by draping their art on it.  The buyers can also have different reasons for wearing it, particularly if their sensitivities let them enjoy the pleasure of consuming art while they take it with them.  They might not even understand why this makes them feel so special.  What they are doing is participating in a communication that the artist started and which comes directly from his(her) creative process.   Art is "one of a kind", therefore, the buyer owns the dialogue but, by wearing it, shares it with the people around them and everybody is elevated by the experience.

Hay arte que uno "se pone", como por ejemplo estolas de seda, joyería exclusiva, carteras pintadas a mano...   El artista escoge estos medios por diferentes razones.  Puede ser que quiera que sus piezas estén "ahí afuera en el mundo"  para que todos las vean.  O puede que su motivación sea la de "intervenir" a la figura humana real, drapeándola con su arte.   Los que compran estas obras   al ponérselas también tienen diferentes razones...por ejemplo que  su sensitividad al arte les permite disfrutárselas mientras las llevan puestas.  A lo mejor ni entienden porqué esto los hace sentirse especiales.   El artista, al hacer la pieza, comienza una comunicación que parte de la idea que origina su proceso creativo.  El comprador es dueño de ese diálogo y al llevarlo consigo, a la vista, lo comparte con todo el que lo ve, haciéndoles partícipe de la excepcional experiencia artística.
